Hearst’s Other Castle

Enfys McMurray
£8.95 Paperback (ISBN:1854112287)

A fascinating insight into the Hollywood lifestyle of a man whose desires knew no barriers and an extraordinary chapter in the life of an historic castle, this book is the story of William Randolph Hearst’s purchase in 1925 of St Donat’s Castle on the south Wales coast. Indulging his love of the mediaeval, he also provided an exotic house for Marion Davies, his film star companion. At one point Hearst was spending $11,000 a day on architectural adornment and art; the castle housed the world’s finest collection of armour.

From 1925, St Donat’s was part of a story of fantastic riches and Hollywood romance. The sleepy Vale of Glamorgan found itself at the centre of the glamour pages: visitors included film stars like Charlie Chaplin and politicians such as Lloyd George, Winston Churchill and the Kennedy family; aristocrats and influential figures arrived for parties, weekends or longer. Yet within ten years Hearst’s empire had virtually collapsed; the art collections were sold and a purchaser for the castle sought.
