In a career spanning four decades, Peter Prendergast established himself as one of Britain’s foremost landscape painters, and a formidable painter of portraits and self portraits. The Painter’s Quarry is a valuable and timely collection of essays and full colour prints, tracing the development of one of Wales’ greatest artists from his roots in the south Wales valleys, via London, to his last studio in north Wales.
Prendergast is best known for his bold, expressionist paintings of the post industrial landscape of Snowdonia. The Painter’s Quarry, gives a clear insight into his precocious talent, influences, methods and vision. Educated at Cardiff Art College, the Slade School of Art in London and Reading University, Prendergast also taught at Liverpool Art College and Coleg Menai.
Influenced by his tutor, Frank Auerbach, and artists such as Cezanne and Bomberg, Peter Prendergast also retained and developed his own original style – resulting in his magnificent drawings and paintings. He won many prizes, bursaries and exhibition opportunities, and had work purchased by the Tate Gallery and private and public galleries worldwide.
Prendergast’s art continued to evolve throughout his life. The final essay of this book considers his most recent work, seascapes from the rocky cliffs of South Stack in Anglesey, made for the major retrospective at Oriel Ynys Mon, in association with which The Painter’s Quarry was published. The essayists in this book are well regarded members of the Arts community. They are David Alston,Tony Curtis, Peter Davies, Robert Macdonald, Lynda Morris, John Russell Taylor and Peter Wakelin.
